Dear Friends,

We would like to invite you to participate in a special event taking place Friday, June 28 at 2 pm EST.  ProPublica spent a number of weeks with the Chicago Workers Collaborative, and other organizations, to investigate the temporary staffing industry for their article “The Expendables: How the Temps Who Power Corporate Giants Are Getting Crushed“.  ProPublica will host a panel to discuss the temp industry and the growing shift by employers to use temp workers instead of full time direct hires, and the impact that this having on workers and the communities they live in.

The panel will consist of ProPublica reporter Michael Grabell, Sociologist George Gonos of SUNY Potsdam, an expert on the temp industry, and Leone Jose Bicchieri, CWC.

Chicago Workers Collaborative and Warehouse Workers for Justice participate at Wal-Mart Protest.

Scores or workers, organizers and community based organizations came out to support the OUR Wal-Mart campaign in the Chicago area on June 7, 2013.  Chicago Workers Collaborative addressed the going use of temps at Wal-Mart & Warehouse Workers for Justice addressed the abuses taking place up and down the Wal-Mart supply chain.

“We’re here in solidarity with the retail workers,” said Mike Compton, who works at a Wal-Mart warehouse in Elwood, where the company’s largest distribution center is located. “We’re all fighting for the same thing: Respect on the job.”
